I-235 closure planned for weekend of Jan. 24
Interstate 235 will be closed to through traffic at the Interstate 44 interchange during the weekend of Jan. 24, state transportation officials announced Tuesday.
The closure is planned to allow the construction contractor to hang new bridge beams over the interstate.
Both northbound and southbound lanes on I-235 will be closed between N 50th Street and N 63rd Street, officials said. Closure of the interstate is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 24, after evening rush-hour traffic.
The interstate is expected to reopen no later than 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, weather permitting. It may reopen sooner if the work is complete.
Several ramps in the area also will be closed during this time period.
The Jan. 24 closure will be the first of as many as five full interstate closures that are expected this year as work continues on the $105 million interchange project.
State transportation officials are encouraging motorists to use alternative routes such as I-35, State Highway 74/Lake Hefner Parkway, Lincoln Boulevard and Martin Luther King Avenue while construction is in progress.
I-35 lane restrictions
Transportation officials also announced that traffic lanes will be narrowed at night to one lane in each direction on Interstate 35 at Ladd Road near Goldsby beginning Wednesday.
Lanes will be narrowed from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday and from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday to permit overhead bridge work.In addition, north and southbound I-35 will be intermittently narrowed to one lane at this location from 8 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday. The process will be repeated nightly through Jan. 25. No Friday night lane closures are planned, officials said.
