Angulo hopes to provide a spark
Energy FC will try to break a franchise record seven-match losing streak Wednesday night at Taft Stadium against Phoenix Rising FC.
The club fell to 1-7 on Saturday night with a 1-0 home loss to the Swope Park Rangers, but Energy FC played much better in the loss than it has in previous weeks.
Energy FC outshot the Swope Park Rangers 17-5 in the match, but a penalty goal by forward Hadji Barry in the 86th minute gave the Rangers the win.
However, Energy FC got a boost with the return of forward Jose Angulo to the starting lineup.
Angulo was the leading scorer last season for Energy FC after coming over in a mid-season acquisition from Saint Louis FC. He fired nine shots on goal against the Swope Park Rangers on Saturday night, an Energy FC record.
Angulo was the catalyst Saturday night, creating scoring chances for an Oklahoma City offense that only has put three goals in the net all season, and Energy FC is counting on the veteran to kick-start the offense.
“My goal is just to come in and try to spark something,” Angulo.
Energy FC badly needs a spark offensively. The club hasn't scored in 429 minutes, the longest drought since 2014, when Energy FC didn't score for 445 minutes during a six-game stretch.
Angulo, 30, said he sat out 10 weeks while recovering from a groin injury. Last season, he tied a career best with 15 goals scored during the regular season, 11 with Energy FC.
Angulo said it has been frustrating watching the team struggle offensively, but he is confident it will change.
“We know we have the personnel to change this around,” he said. “All it takes is one game, one goal. This is the time of year you got to start getting everything together. I think we will be OK. We just need that first win.”
The next opportunity comes Wednesday night against Phoenix Rising FC, 4-1-3 on the season.
"It's definitely not going to be easy, but if we play like we performed last game, just capitalizing on our chances, I think we can come out with a victory,” Angulo said.
