Class 4A boys state tournament: Harrah knocked out by Victory Christian

It was another heartbreaking defeat Thursday for Harrah in the first round of the Class 4A boys’ state tournament at Deer Creek High School.

Last year the top-ranked Panthers were upset by Fort Gibson in the opening round in the same building by Fort Gibson. This year, a baseline jumper by Eli Freeman with 2 seconds left lifted No. 4 Victory Christian to a 38-36 win over No. 5 Harrah.

With the game tied 36-36 and 1:45 remaining, Victory Christian held the ball for the next 1:43 before Freeman was able to get the game-winning shot. He got a Harrah defender in the air on ball fake then stepped inside the 3-point line for a wide-open look on the baseline.

Harrah’s Carlo Slaughter then missed a desperation heave from mid-court at the buzzer.

Harrah outscored Victory Christian in every quarter except the fourth, as the Conquerors erased a 29-26 Panthers’ lead after three by scoring the first six points of the period.

OU signee Brady Manek led Harrah with 22 points, hitting six pointers, getting 13 in the first half. In the end, Victory Christian had more firepower then the Manek-led Panthers.

While Harrah (19-9) had just three players score in the game, Victory Christian (24-4) had six players listed in the scoring column, led by R.J. Wakely’s 10 points.
