Spurs fan: Popovich coached a bad game

Heath Holt is a big Spurs fan who works at the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City. Heath writes me frequently, offering Spurs updates.

Heath wrote Monday night after Game 2 of Thunder-Spurs, and his observations were interesting enough to share:

“Some very very unhappy notes from the Spurs-Thunder game. Make no mistake, the Spurs fans are steaming mad…

  1. Pop’s coaching was bad, Kansas football bad.
  2. Pulling a hot Kawhi Leonard who had just made three shots in a row and subbing in Ginobili to guard Westbrook (sheer lunacy).
  3. Telling the players in the huddle, “Just relax, we have the whole rest of the game ahead of us.” Just relax? I think they were pretty relaxed. That was the whole problem. I don’t really enjoy the drunk wine philosopher, Pop.
  4. Why the strange lineups? He puts in Boban instead of Boris Diaw the playoff veteran? Then limits Boris’s minutes for the rest of the game?
  5. This game saw the erratic version of Kawhi Leonard. Silly turnovers, dribbling with his head down, jacking up ill-advised threes at the worst possible times (usually when the Spurs had come back to tie the game).
  6. All the blown layups (Green and Duncan) were horse-whipping offenses. They lead directly to Thunder fast breaks and demoralized the team.
  7. The Spurs blew a historic game by Aldridge. They mysteriously went away from him in the second half when he was scorching hot. Mills was busy clanging 3-pointers and Parker was dribbling in circles. Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out how to get Aldridge the ball. He is a pretty big target in the post. Those three free throws at the end of the game by Aldridge were money in the bank. He was flat out awesome.
  8. Patty Mills picked a terrible time to go into the tank (0-6 in the fourth quarter) and missing wide wide open threes.
  9. Parker was also missing threes with nobody within 20 feet of him. Not his shot really, but when you’re that alone, damn.
  10. The Thunder were trying to blow the lead by leaving Spurs shooters freakishly wide open, but the Spurs shooters went into a deep freeze. The Thunder perimeter defense is a giant trouble spot for them. They did well contesting drives, but leaving guys totally alone time after time very dangerous.
  11. Ginobili had a nice throwback game but was roasted alive by Westbrook. What was Pop thinking having him attempt to guard Westbrook for seven minutes straight? Was he trying to give Westbrook a massive dose of confidence and hand over a quick 12 points?
  12. The game could have been a Thunder blowout if not for Cameron Payne. The Thunder seemed to fall apart when he ran the offense and enabled the Spurs to get back into the game twice after they were down by double digits. He is not ready for this type of furnace yet.
  13. I much prefer the 2014 laser-focused Tim Duncan who was angry after he divorced his wife. We are now getting the jolly contented Duncan who plays tickle tickle with his kids before the game, blows layups and is out of position on defense. Seeing Adams bringing the hammer down multiple times on a hapless Duncan was painful.
  14. The blown call by the zebras at the end was no surprise. Last year it was a buzzer ‘accidentally’ going off early. The NBA’s front office is getting revenge against Pop for resting his players during prime time games, snubbing the sideline reporters and acting like a complete arrogant a$$ during the post-game press conference. He is bringing it on himself and the team for no good reason other than he is just cranky. I thought it was funny that the angriest person in the building was Chris Webber over the last call. He sounded like he wanted to go over throw some rounds. I bet TNT has a sitdown with Weber. Then Charles Barkley (who has carte blanche to say anything) said he had never seen anything like that blown call in 30 years. I don’t buy the “we have never seen anything like that before” excuse from the officials. I am guessing they were watching the Kansas-OU game early this season. They darn well knew the rule and they darn well saw the same thing happen in the KU-OU game.
  15. Ibaka was much more energetic this game. Although the three-point foul on Aldridge was brainless. That can’t happen.
  16. The real winner in this game was the Warriors. They are going to sweep the Blazers, get a long rest and then chainsaw whoever staggers out of this series.

Interesting. Appreciate it, Heath.
