OKC Thunder: Grading the Thunder's 98-97 win over the Spurs

NBA official says Dion Waiters should have been called for offensive foul OKC survives frantic finish in Game 2, evens series with San Antonio Video shows Spurs fan holding Steven Adams' arm on final play Thunder journal: Roberson’s defense on Leonard keys Thunder bounceback in Game 2 TNT analysts claim Spurs robbed by non-call in closing seconds of Thunder victory More Thunder

The Thunder came out roaring in Game 2 and held on at the end to beat the Spurs 98-97 Monday night and even the Western Conference semifinals series at 1-1. The grades reflect a gritty performance.

Adjustments: A. Billy Donovan showed he has a trick or two up his sleeve. Donovan had Andre Roberson guard Kawhi Leonard most of the game, and Roberson's lateral quickness proved effective against Leonard. The Spurs all-star had 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Donovan also chose not to double team LaMarcus Aldridge after his scorching first half, which included 22 points and 9-of-11 shooting on a variety of isolations. The Spurs didn't go back to Aldridge a ton in the second half and survived. Give Donovan credit for trying different lineups, including a few minutes of small ball and more Enes Kanter/Steven Adams together.

Bench: C. Kanter was his usual productive self, and Dion Waiters had a big fourth quarter with a huge 3-pointer and some quality defense. But otherwise, the Thunder bench was a bust.  With 3:41 left in the third quarter and OKC up 75-66, Donovan used a lineup of Durant and all bench players, including Anthony Morrow and Cam Payne, with both Leonard and Aldridge on the court. The Spurs scored on five straight possessions and got within 77-76. Game on.

Starters: A. Donovan played coy at shootaround and pregame, making it sound like Roberson might not start. But Roberson started, and the Thunder's starting lineup was excellent. It got OKC off to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter. It also outscored the Spurs 15-9 to open the third quarter. For the game, the starting unit played 16:47 together and outscored San Antonio 36-21.

Ball security: C. The Thunder committed 18 turnovers, leading to 24 San Antonio points. But the Spurs got no points off turnovers in the fourth quarter. And some of OKC's early turnovers were the result of a frenetic pace early in the game which jump-started the Thunder's first quarter. Russell Westbrook committed just three turnovers, which is a phenomenal performance. But there's no excuse for the Thunder's failure to get the ball inbounded properly at the end of the game and give the Spurs a chance to win.

Uniforms: A. Whether you like the Thunder's sky blue uniforms or not, it was time to go back to the primary colors. If the Thunder wants a uniform change, fine. Declare it. Otherwise, don't let the alternates become the primaries.

Crunch time: C. For once, the Thunder's late-game offense wasn't the problem. The Thunder committed two huge blunders in the final 20 seconds that gave the Spurs a chance. First, Serge Ibaka fouled Aldridge on a 3-point shot and the Thunder up four. Then Waiters failed to inbound the ball cleanly, leading to a Danny Green steal in the waning seconds. Waiters appeared to push off Manu Ginóbili, who was guarding the inbounds pass, but Ginobili appeared to step on the line. It led to a frantic final seconds. But the offensive movement at crunch time was solid. In the final 200 seconds, the Thunder had five possessions and scored thrice, getting at least decent shots all five times.

Paint: A. The Thunder was destroyed in the paint in Game 1. Not in Game 2. The Thunder finished much better, making 19 of 32 on shots in the paint. Meanwhile, the Thunder defense was much more physical. Aldridge was sensational. But Tim Duncan made just one of eight shots. David West made just three of eight. Leonard was bothered much more, too. The Thunder contested every shot. Steven Adams had a monster game, with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
