Oklahoma football: Baker Mayfield added to Maxwell Award watch list
NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was one of seven players added Thursday to the Maxwell Award watch list.
Mayfield joins OU running back Samaje Perine and receiver Sterling Shepard, who were both on the preseason watch list in July.
In addition to Mayfield, others added to the list Thursday were Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly, Houston quarterback Greg Ward, Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Indiana running back Jordan Howard, USC receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Baylor receiver Corey Coleman.
The Maxwell Award is given annually to college football’s player of the year. Past OU winners are flanker Tommy McDonald (1956) and quarterback Jason White (2004).
So far this season, Mayfield has completed 66.2 percent of his pass attempts for 1,593 yards, 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 133 yards and four scores this year.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 2, and three finalists will be announced Nov. 24. The winner will be revealed at the College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10 in Atlanta.
