CU Boulder gets new engineering and applied science dean

The University of Colorado will have a new dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science in the spring semester.

Dr. Robert D. Braun, who is currently the David and Andrew Lewis Professor of Space Technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, will join the CU Boulder faculty in the fall and officially take the reins in January.

Braun is replacing outgoing dean Robert Davis, who has been the dean since 2002 and a faculty member at CU Boulder for 34 years.

The college chose Braun after a national search made up by a large pool of candidates, many of whom were "exceptionally qualified," the release said.

Braun has worked at Georgia Tech since 2003. Before that, he worked at NASA Langley Research Center for 16 years and was NASA's chief technologist between 2010 and 2011.

In 2012, Braun founded a Georgia Tech interdisciplinary research center.

Braun is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, vice chair of the National Academies Space Studies Board, an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics fellow and editor-in-chief of the organization's publication. He also is the author or co-author of more than 300 technical publications.

He received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Penn State, a master's degree in astronautics from the George Washington University and a doctoral degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University.
