Why was 2020 Bedlam moved to October?

The Big 12 announced its 2020 football schedule, and the big news was a Bedlam October. The Sooners and Cowboys will play Oct. 24 in Norman.

Here is the OU schedule:

Sept. 5: Missouri State

Sept. 12: Tennessee

Sept. 26: at Army

Oct. 3: Baylor

Oct. 10: Texas in Dallas

Oct. 17: at Iowa State

Oct. 24: Oklahoma State

Oct. 31: at TCU

Nov. 7: at West Virginia

Nov. 14: Kansas State

Nov. 21: Kansas

Nov. 28: at Texas Tech

Here is the OSU schedule:

Sept. 3: Oregon State

Sept. 12: Tulsa

Sept. 19: Western Illinois

Oct. 3: at TCU

Oct. 10: Iowa State

Oct. 17: at Kansas

Oct. 24: at Oklahoma

Oct. 31: Texas Tech

Nov. 7: at Baylor

Nov. 14: West Virginia

Nov. 21: at Kansas State

Nov. 28: Texas

Here are my takeaways from the schedule.

* The move of Bedlam to October is absurd. The SEC and the ACC have long-established models for rivalry games – in-state matchups are played on Thanksgiving weekend. Alabama-Auburn. The Egg Bowl in Mississippi. Georgia Tech-Georgia. Florida State-Florida. South Carolina-Clemson. Kentucky-Louisville. Tennessee-Vanderbilt. N.C. State-North Carolina. Virginia Tech-Virginia.

Why mess with it? There was a time when OU fans and officials downplayed Bedlam and didn’t mind if it was played in October. But the changing face of conference alignment helped the Sooners come to appreciate Bedlam, and despite the Sooners’ dominance of the series, it’s always fun and often dramatic.

Playing on Thanksgiving weekend makes everything easier on everyone – students, fans, players, coaches. Travel is minimal. The games are easy to reach for all concerned.

Television must be behind the scheduling change, but for what purpose? I don’t get it.

* OU’s October is brutal. Baylor, Texas, Iowa State, OSU and TCU. Only the Bears and the Cowboys in Norman. It’s a reversal of the 2019 schedule, when the Sooners’ November consists of most of the best teams.

* OSU’s season-ending home game is odd. Texas on Thanksgiving weekend. The Cowboys and the Longhorns in Stillwater.

The Big 12 clearly would like to avoid a Big 12 Championship matchup of teams that played the previous week. Maybe that’s behind the decision-making process – maybe the Big 12 is high on the Cowboys and thinks it could make it to Arlington, along with the Sooners.

* The Big 12 says two of the five games scheduled for Nov. 28 will be moved to Friday, Nov. 27. In addition to OU at Tech and Texas at OSU, the other games that weekend are TCU at Kansas, West Virginia at Iowa State and Kansas State at Baylor.

* OU’s only off week next season is just before the Army game. That’s a plus. Two weeks to figure out the triple option.

* OSU’s only off week next season is just before nine straight conference games without a break. That will make for a long stretch.

* Two other conference games have been scheduled for Thursday night – Baylor at Texas Tech on October 15 and Kansas State at Iowa State on October 29.
