Marchers on state Capitol demand gun reform

"This is what democracy looks like!" was the chant Saturday reverberating down Lincoln Boulevard and at the state Capitol by a throng demanding gun reform.

The Oklahoma City march in conjunction with the national March For Your Life demonstration began just before noon. An official number of attendees was not available, but hundreds of participants ranging from toddlers to seniors joined the march.

The march and ensuing rally was organized by and for youth who say they have seen enough of gun violence in their lifetimes, especially in learning institutions.

Marchers carried dozens of homemade signs, with myriad slogans. "Would Jesus own one?" read one with an assault-style rifle depicted. Another brought teachers into the fray, demanding to "give teachers raises, not guns."

Others went with a more data-driven approach. One sign was a chart depicting gun ownership versus gun fatalities, while another just listed the names and photos of state legislators.

Once the marchers reached the Capitol, a moment of silence was held for victims of gun violence before the rally commenced.

State senators and representatives were the subject of most of the youth speakers. Organizers said that all were invited to attend, but only state Rep. Jacob Rosecrants, D-Norman, and state Sen. Anastasia Pittman, D-Oklahoma City, appeared.

"We aren't here to make small talk. We are here to demand change. Yes, that's what I said. Demand. We're not asking, we're not begging, or pleading. We asked after Columbine. We begged after Virginia Tech. We pled after Sandy Hook, but nothing changed, so we're done with that," co-organizer Jamie Pool, of Sallisaw High School, told the gathered demonstrators.

"We're not giving our lawmakers a choice any more. Give us change or we will vote you out," Pool said.

Ravi Patel, a senior at Southmoore High School, said, "Our legislators have lost touch with reality and humanity."

"Today isn't the end of the movement. It's just the beginning," he promised.

The attendees were just as fired up about the topic as the speakers.

"I think that gun violence is an extremely important issue that is being looked over due to the thousands of dollars that are being poured into the government through politicians who just use politics to make a living for their families," said Sarah Kim, 19, a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma City.

"Our lives are at risk here. It's much more important than any job, or any money that you can make," Kim said.

"I'm here today because I think it's time for a change. I think there needs to be a ban on AR-15s and military-style weapons," Jess Frimberger, 17, said. She attends Deer Creek High School.

A handful of counter-protesters appeared at the rally, and although some heated words were exchanged, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers separated the groups without incident. The rally dissipated peacefully about 2 p.m.

Co-organizer James Limbaugh said that he and Pool, who are both Sallisaw High School students, expected only a couple hundred students to show up.

"It turns out that we've passed that by a lot," he said.

"This is absolutely student-led," Limbaugh said. "It was a long process, but we got it done."
