Two dead, 12 hurt in Interstate 40 crash
ERICK — At least two people were killed and 12 more injured in a multi-vehicle wreck Saturday on Interstate 40 near the Texas state line, authorities said.
The victims' names have not been released.
At least 16 vehicles were involved in the crash about 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 40 near Erick, Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokeswoman Betsy Randolph said.
Troopers were still sorting through the wreckage looking for victims about sundown. Several tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, and at least one of the rigs caught fire after the crash, Randolph said.
As of 7:45 p.m., the highway is still closed. It's expected to be several more hours before it reopens, transportation department spokesman Cody Boyd said.
He said heavy fog in the area early Saturday was problematic for motorists.
“The last I heard, it's been moving along pretty well. Traffic has been flowing,” Boyd said early Saturday evening.
As of 11 p.m.,both eastbound and both westbound lanes were open to traffic, troopers reported. The major cross-country highway had been closed for more than 14 hours.
